Zagreb
Zagreb Marathon
Zagreb Marathon is the largest marathon race in the country. The marathon starts on a Sunday in October 2016 at 10am on Ban Jelačić Square and consists of three different races: a marathon, half marathon and the citizen’s race.
Istria
Days of Shellfish
Where: Northwest Istria
When: October – January
In winter, the Shellfish Days event is held from mid February until end of March. During this period one can sample the finest Istrian sea food recipes featuring scallops, mussels, warty venus (a salt-water clam), Noah’s Ark shells, black scallops and oysters. It is safe to say that diners will experience the special seafood taste complemented by Istrian wines and the best olive oil.
Days of Asparagus
The Asparagus event results in local restaurant menus featuring one of the healthiest and tastiest wild plants to be found in Istria. Gourmet creations to be sampled using asparagus as the main ingredient include using it in risottos, salads and in cream soups. Picking fresh asparagus as soon as it is in season during the first few days of spring creates quite a frenzy of activity amongst local residents.
Days of Sole Fish
The first days of autumn bring Sole Fish Days and Northwest Istria attracts lovers of this high quality fish, which is by some appreciated more than bream or sea bass. Enjoy sole through four delicious courses, prepared in various ways – the Carpaccio or as a soup, with gnocchi, ravioli or simply just grilled.
Days of Adriatic Squid
Domestic Adriatic squid is a true gourmet delicacy, a fact that guests will appreciate during the Days of Adriatic Squid event held in early winter – the main fishing season. Domestic Adriatic squid must be tried when prepared in teran wine or as a risotto, a delicious cream soup, baked with vegetables, with pasta or stuffed under the ‘peka’.
Tuberfest – fair for Istrian white truffles
Where: Livade, municipality of Oprtalj, Istria

Tuberfest is a traditional event that every year in October since 1994 in order to promote truffles as a unique gastronomic product of the area. Companies registered to sell truffles and numerous producers of autochthonous agricultural products from Croatian and wider will participate, thus enabling the extension of the tourist season in the area. At the same time with entertainment, cultural and gastronomic contents, show cooking, various sports tournaments and truffle seeking performed by an experienced truffle-seeker with his dogs.
Central Croatia
The Chestnut Festival
Where: Kostajnica, a small town in central Croatia.

There is not a single dish including chestnuts that cannot be found at the Chestnut Festival in Kostajnica. In addition to trying various dishes made of baked and boiled chestnuts and sweets made of delicious chestnut puree, all visitors are invited to take part in the chestnut harvest. This is an opportunity to take a walk through chestnut woods, spend some time in good company, sing a song or two and do all other things guaranteeing a good atmosphere.
